RealtimeUK used a technique called Photogrammetry to scan both the exterior and interior of the car, as there was no CAD data or schematic drawings available. This enabled the team to create their own 3D blueprint. The technical model team then set to work building a highly accurate Civic. Once approved by Honda, RealtimeUK’s texturing and lighting specialists developed the required high-quality finish ready for rendering the 360 degree revolve to be featured on the main Honda UK site.
RealtimeUK then produced 3 ‘tour’ movies – Interior, Exterior and Performance. The Interior animation takes in features such as dual zone dashboard, boot area and storage compartments. Due to the detail needed for the interior shots, the car had to be modelled from every angle to ensure 100% accuracy when viewing in close up shots.
The Exterior tour featured the ‘hidden’ rear passenger doors and the dual sunroof amongst other things while the Performance movie demonstrated the car’s amazing handling, braking and cornering.
Finally, the team moved onto the Civic microsite work, the most dynamic and creative of the sequences. This involved modelling the carpark roof area and utilises fast paced camerawork and action to really bring the car’s features to the viewer’s attention! Midas required 6 points of interaction within the intro spin where the camera pauses and we see feature elements, such as seats folding and the steering wheel tilting, ‘exploding’ out of the car.
As usual the RealtimeUK team had a tight deadline to work to, but careful planning and efficient workflow processes allowed all the animation sequence to be delivered to Midas on time.
