Following the huge success of their shared world pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves, the development team over at Rare decided that E3 2018 would be the perfect place to reveal more about their next two highly anticipated game updates, Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores. We were thrilled to find out that they wanted our help to make it happen!
The joint E3 teaser trailer for these updates was made via a short in-engine cinematic that our artists created within the UE4 engine, the same engine that Rare used to develop the game. Tom Pullan, our Lead Artist, explains how working within the game’s engine was an exciting opportunity for him and his team: “The artists at Rare have created some great characters, and staying faithful to them and the game was a big part of this trailer. Some parts of the cinematic required lip sync for dialogue scenes, so we had to create more intricate facial rigs. Refining the rig is a reasonably fast process, and it only takes a couple of days to get the performance we wanted for the trailer.” You can find out more about our In-Engine pipeline and processes over on this blog piece!
The resulting trailer for Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores is the second of these in-engine cinematic teasers that we produced for Rare’s loyal fanbase. The trailer for The Hungering Deep, starring old pirate bard ‘Merry’ Merrick, was the first to launch in May, while Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores are set to arrive later in the year.
